If you start off your day by reading email, reading some joke a friend emailed you, etc., it will take you forever to actually start working and doing something productive.
Instead, you should try to attack your most boring, difficult, and tedious task first. If you manage to get it done (or show any progress at all), you'll be inspired and productive for the rest of the day.
